About the book
Before there was earth or sky, Ginnungagap lay between Niflheim's eternal frost and Muspelheim's consuming flames.
In this boundless void, the primeval cow Audhumla wanders through a sea of poison and darkness. When fire meets ice, Ymir awakens – the world's first living being, immense, untamed, and unaware of good or evil. From his body the race of frost giants grows forth, while Audhumla licks Búri, the forefather of the gods, out of the primeval ice.
Thus begins the struggle between two principles: chaos that creates without purpose, and will that seeks to give creation form.
From Búri's line comes Odin, Vili and Vé. The three brothers discover patterns in the wild primeval world and dream of something that has never existed before: a world of order, boundaries and meaning. But to create it, they must turn against Ymir, the very source of all life around them.
When the primordial giant falls, his body becomes the building material of the new world. His blood becomes the sea, his flesh becomes the earth, his bones become the mountains, and his skull becomes the vault of the sky. Midgard and Asgard take shape, but creation has its price. In time, fate too arrives, and with fate comes the certainty that even gods may one day fall.
